EG 9a: In the footsteps of the past in Cairo II

5 days city trip


The ensemble of Islamic architecture of the Islamic Old City of Cairo (Islamic Cairo) was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1979. In this cultural tour you will visit and walk not only mosques but places. You will walk through the old streets and neighborhoods of Islamic Cairo, which has been recognized as one of the greatest concentration of medieval architectural treasures in the Islamic world. We meet the people there and eat in typical restaurants.


Day 1: Arrival

Arrival in Cairo Airport, reception and transfer to the hotel. Overnight stay in Cairo. (-)


Day 2: Giza Necropolis

In the morning drive by minibus to the pyramid field of Giza. We will see the three most famous pyramids of Kheops, Khafre and Menkaure. Who wants can climb the inside of a pyramid. Around the pyramids are the tombs of high officials and members of the royal family. We will visit the Valley Temple of Pharaoh Khafre and the Sphinx. Afternoon free.  Overnight in hotel. (BD)


Day 3: Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids of Giza is a monumental work of art of modern architecture that provides an overwhelming stage for Egypt's great history. It is said to be the largest archaeological museum in the world. There we have a full day visit. Hotel overnight. (BD)


Day 4: Fustat

Drive to Fustat, which was founded by the Arab commander Amr ibn al-As around 643-750 as a military settlement. From the city, only its mosque, the first mosque in Africa, has been preserved.  There we visit the newly opened Civilization Museum with the royal mummies.  Then you will visit the Coptic Old Cairo within the walls of the Roman fortress of Babylon: you will look at the Ben-Ezra Synagogue, where Moses was found in his basket in the papyrus thicket. It is also interesting to visit the famous hanging church "Al Moallaka" as well as St. Sergius Church, whose crypt existed in pre-Christian times and where the Holy Family is said to have taken shelter for three months while fleeing to Egypt.

Day 5: Islamic Cairo - Departure

After breakfast, we will drive with our suitcases towards the airport. On the way, we will stop at Bab el Nasr, the 10th-century gateway to Cairo. Your tour starts on one of the oldest streets in Egypt: El Moez Le Din Allah Street. This street is a witness of historical Cairo with various monuments spread on both sides of the street, such as Bab El Fetouh and Bab El Nasr. Move on to the northern part of the city, the neighborhood of Cairo with the oldest monuments, where you can visit Barqouq Mosque and Nahassen School, El Aqmar Mosque, El Saleh Talae Mosque, Qalawoon Hospital, and School. The tomb complex of Sultan Barquq was built in Cairo from 1384 to 1386. The builder was Barquq, who was the sultan in Egypt from 1382 to 1399. The complex consisted of a Friday Mosque, a madrasa for 125 students, and a tekke. You will also visit the Khan EL Khalili Bazaar, one of the oldest markets in Egypt. Colorful clothes, silver and goldware, carvings, clothing, spices, shoes, dried fruits, hookahs, household goods, perfume oils, there is almost nothing that you cannot buy here. EG 7: Luxor, culture, and relaxation

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival, reception, and transfer to the hotel. Overnight stay in Cairo. (D)


Day 2: Luxor: Thebes West I

Morning visit to the west bank: the Valley of the Kings is particularly home to the tombs of the rulers of the New Kingdom (ca. 1550 - 1069 BC). The valley is located on the edge of the desert and is lined with high mountains, namely the natural rock pyramid. There we visit three tombs. Then we visit the terraced temple of Hatshepsut of the 18th dynasty. In Christian times, the monastery of St. Phoibammon was built on the temple, which was used until the 11th century. We finish the excursion with a stop at the Memnon colossi. The two statues were located in the past in front of the pylons of the entrance to the temple of Amenophis III from the 18th dynasty. Day 3: Luxor: Thebes West II

This morning we have a second visit to Thebes West.  In Medinet Habu we visit the million-year house of Ramses III. This temple complex served both the death cult of the deceased king and the worship of the god Amun. Afterward, we visit the little-visited, excellently preserved tomb of Sennodjem in the Valley of the Artists. In the village of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, built at the foot of the Theban Mountains directly above the ancient Egyptian burial ground of high officials, we visit two beautifully painted tombs. Day 4: Abydos - Dendara

Very early departure to Abydos, the main place of worship of the god Osiris. Visit of the temple complexes from the time of Sethos I and Ramses II. Afterward, we drive back to Dendera and visit the temple of Hathor, which dates back to the Ptolemaic period. Overnight stay in Luxor. (BD)


Day 5: Luxor: Thebes East

Morning visit to the extensive temple complexes of Karnak and the Temple of Luxor. Karnak is the largest temple complex in Egypt. The oldest visible remains of the temple date back to the 12th dynasty under Sesostris I. Until the Roman Empire, the temple complex was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt. The temple complex has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, together with the Luxor Temple and the Theban Necropolis. Afternoon free. We recommend a stroll through the Luxor Museum. Overnight stay in Luxor. (BD)


Day 6: Edfu

Drive from Luxor to Edfu. There we will visit the best-preserved temple in Egypt. The temple complex of Edfu was dedicated to the local god Hor-Behdeti, the "Horus of Edfu", and was built during the Ptolemaic rule over Egypt. Return to Luxor. The afternoon is at leisure. Overnight stay in Luxor. (BD)

Day 8: Departure

Transfer to Luxor airport and departure. (B)
